Unfortunately, life seems to happen so quickly that we often don’t have time to open our boxes of memories and walk down memory lane. That is why I am glad that our job here at For Keeps is turning memories into art!
Too often, I see these design shows & magazines, like The Block, Belle Magazines, & House Rules, beautifully designed rooms without souls. Although I appreciate that the purpose is to sell the homes, I can’t help but wonder how many people fill their homes with art and trinkets that have little or no meaning whilst important memories are left in the dark.
I, myself, am not immune to it. It was only a few years ago while holding my beautiful newborn granddaughter I thought about the box of my daughter’s baby trinkets, her bear, her photos, and her hospital band all collecting dust. My heart sank… Over the years, I kept those things as precious mementoes they are, but, I couldn’t remember the last time I looked at them. I went home and pulled out the old boxes and decided to do something with them, so I could appreciate them more.
Over Christmas, I have again caught myself realising I have been neglectful. It came to my attention it had been more than 2 years since I had looked at photographs of my deceased parents, let alone the family heirlooms. Once again that oh so familiar feeling of guilt washed over me as I pulled them out dusty and tarnished. What would I have done if they had been damaged because I simply got too busy to care for them? I can now proudly say that not only is dad’s branding iron and ribbons on display they’re protected with the best archival framing techniques. I can’t wait for my granddaughter to come over so I can show her my dad and his achievements.
So next time you’re thinking about the blank spot on your wall, don’t go to the shop; take a walk down memory lane and let us help you let good memories hang around.
